We are absolutely thrilled to share the incredible success of our very first Smile Sports Pop-Up Camp in the Philippines! On November 22, 2025, the energy at the Sta. Ines MJM Court in Mabalacat, Pampanga was electric. We brought together basketball, fitness, and essential health education for an unforgettable day of growth, laughter, and community.
With the support of local organizers, passionate coaches, and eager young athletes, this pilot camp exceeded every expectation. It laid the foundation for an exciting data-driven future for Smile Sports.

Empowering the Youth: 80 Campers, 3 Schools, and Elite Youth Programs
Our debut camp delivered a high-energy program to 80 amazing kids from across the community. The camper turnout was a beautiful mix of grassroots talent and local student-athletes, drawing from:
- Three Public Elementary Schools: Mabalacat Elementary School (MES), Sta. Ines Elementary School (SIES), and SIIS.
- Top Area Youth Programs: Players from two of the region’s premier youth sports development initiatives.
- All-Girls Youth Program: An elite, all-girls basketball program making waves in the local scene.

To ensure long-term impact, each participating school was fully represented by an accompanying teacher and coach. They will keep the momentum going long after the pop-up camp finishes.

World-Class Coaching with a Local Heart
The basketball programming was led by our visionary founder, Coach Brian Murphy, who brought his collegiate-level expertise directly from the Chicago area, where he currently coaches at Elmhurst University.
Alongside Coach Murphy, the camp’s on-court execution relied heavily on our phenomenal leadership team and eight local Filipino coaches. Led on the ground by Ty Urea and Milo Ronquillo Bonifacio this coaching staff brought unparalleled passion, local connection, and high-energy instruction to every single drill.

The 8-Station Circuit: Where Sports Meet Science & Wellness
Our structured camp was divided into eight specialized stations designed to develop the total athlete—both mentally and physically:
- Passing – Mastering court vision and accurate ball distribution.
- Ball Handling – Developing tight control and confidence under pressure.
- Shooting – Form mechanics and rhythm shooting.
- Individual Moves – Creating space and scoring off the bounce.
- Defense – Footwork, positioning, and high-intensity effort.
- Fitness – Agility and functional athletic movements.
- Dental Station – Hands-on oral hygiene education and resources.
- Wellness – Mental clarity, body awareness, and healthy lifestyle choices.
Following the instructional circuit, the court transformed into pure competitive fun. The kids put their new skills to the test with live games, high-stakes 3-on-3 tournaments, and full-court scrimmages and contest for prizes!
More Than a Game: A Data-Driven Proof of Concept

This camp was about more than just refining crossovers and jump shots. Campers showed a substantial increase in basic oral health education after passing through our dental and wellness stations.
This pilot camp serves as the official catalyst for our new data-driven section of Smile Sports. Moving forward, we will be collecting hard data to support our core premise: kids learn life skills and health habits significantly faster when sports are involved. By pairing physical activity with critical wellness education, we are creating a sticky learning environment that leaves a lasting footprint on a child’s development.
Powered by the Village: Our Neighborhood Collaborators
An international operation like this requires a village, and the Mabalacat community completely opened its arms to us. We owe a massive debt of gratitude to the MJM Barangay Officials and a spectacular network of local volunteers.

A special shout-out goes to Dr. Ethel and her wonderful family, who live locally. Without their tireless support, this camp simply would not have been possible. From coordinating transportation and handling registration to managing water stations, packing camper goodie bags, arranging snacks, and sorting out camp shirts—they did it all with smiles on their faces!
Breaking Bread and Looking Forward
The kids were incredibly grateful for the opportunity, but truth be told, we learned just as much from them on and off the court.

One of our absolute favorite traditions at the conclusion of an international camp is taking off the whistles, sitting down, and breaking bread with the staff. Exploring the vibrant culture, rich history, and incredible food of the Philippines alongside our new lifetime friends was the perfect ending to a historic milestone.
